Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
