The British tennis star secured the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Although he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory marks Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to embrace my game in the closing months of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the greatest victory of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and probably the most confident competitor in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which represented the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's early professional path.

Game Analysis

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to a win early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. However, the British contender gradually fought his way into the match by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling rallies. His relentless shot tolerance and consistency slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the match, the world number one served well but he struggled badly to find his timing with his rally strokes. The rising talent seemed particularly uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the sport for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. On the other side, the British player presented Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his reliability, athleticism and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to move forward and strike effectively.

After struggling for an extended period due to a major arm issue and difficulties with his form, the tennis professional slipped as far down as 91st globally this year.
