Donald Trump’s latest threat to enforce an further complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that Beijing could enact its own unrevealed “retaliatory steps” if the US President executes his pledge, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade conflict.

This past Friday, Trump responded at Beijing’s move to tighten its policies for foreign shipments of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

He also warned to pull out of a scheduled talks with China’s President Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a meeting in South Korea later this month.

His statements on that day shook global markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since April.

His comments reignited fears of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the two sides had reached an agreement to eliminate significant levies on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the two nations.

This left, US tariffs on Chinese goods facing an additional import tax compared with the start of the year, while American products entering the Chinese market incur a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the format of written responses to media inquiries – echoed terminology from the peak of the ongoing trade dispute.

The remarks condemned United States controls on electronic components while justifying China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “routine measures” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.

Their representative remarked that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, misused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” discriminatory practices against China.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the proper method to interact with the Chinese government,” their representative commented.

“Beijing’s stance” on a trade conflict has remained consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Recently, Beijing declared it was strengthening overseas sale regulations on key elements and other materials vital for high-technology production.

The action was viewed as a significant step, as the country processes about ninety percent of the global rare earth supply, which are employed in products such as solar panels and mobile phones.

The recent comments from the US and China are being interpreted by observers as a strategy of strengthening positions ahead of forthcoming discussions.

Is not yet known whether a summit between Trump and China’s leader, expected at a summit in South Korea later this month, will take place as planned.
