RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
