Citizens have come together throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future governance of the territory

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise needed for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population desire the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the evening falls, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported another two victims had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the south region, medics said.
