Our team is verifying images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
