What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
